Swordsmith Horii Taneji was born as the second son of Horii Toshihide, and his grandfather was Taneaki and his older brother Nobuhide. He inherited the character "Tane" from his grandfather and was named Taneji because he was the second son. In March 1940, he joined the Muroran Works of the Japan Steel Works, and learned sword forging from his father, Toshihide, who was at the attached swordsmith shop at the time. In 1943, his works were selected for the New Japanese Sword Exhibition. In 1952, he was honored to create a sword commemorating the peace treaty. From 1958 to 1963, he exhibited and was selected at the sword-making techniques exhibition, and won numerous awards at the New Famous Sword Exhibition, including the Effort Award in 1964, the Encouragement Award in 1969, and the Effort Award in 1970.
