I'm no kendo expert, nor do I have a distinguished fighting record. That's why I understand the concerns and questions ordinary kendo practitioners have. So I wrote the "Kendo Equipment Manual" for safe kendo practice and the "Guidepost to Mind and Technique" as a guidebook for deepening understanding of kendo. In the more than 40 years I've been nurturing young people at the local Higashi-Oizumi Kendo Club, I've sought out my sensei, asked teachers from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, and practiced with other teachers and friends in my quest to improve my kendo. Over the course of my time, I've discovered three characteristics of "heart-touching kendo" that elicits a "wow" from opponents and spectators alike:
1 True, true strength to attack and break through
2. Goodness, a pure and honest heart
3. Beauty: The vivid clarity of graceful movement
I am impressed by the overwhelming physical strength and genius techniques of young people, but what truly moves me and makes me aspire to empathize with them is not victory or defeat or strength, but empathy with truth, goodness, and beauty. I want to improve my kendo to one that is uniquely my own, not borrowed or second-hand, but uniquely my own. (From the "Introduction")
