As a measure against COVID-19 infection, the All Japan Kendo Federation recommended last year that kendo masks be made from men and tenugui cloths. These masks were convenient and could be made from common materials, but because they were made from cotton, they were difficult to breathe through.

So, this time, in order to minimize breathlessness, I tried making a kendo mask using a cooling face towel made of mesh material.

The face towel we used is this Super Men Towel , which gives a cooling sensation just by wetting it with water.

Since Super Men Towel is made of synthetic fiber, you can treat the edges without sewing by burning them over a candle flame.

How to make it

1. Fold the Super Men Towel in half lengthwise and cut it with scissors.

② Heat the cut edges of the Super Men Towel over a candle flame to melt them.

③ Cut the mask elastic cord to a length (approximately 50 cm) that can be passed over your nose and tied around your head.

④ Spread the cut Super Men Towel out so that the back side is facing up and place the cut rubber band in the center.

⑤ Fold the Super Men Towel in half.

⑥ Put the mask on your face like a kendo mask, looping the elastic bands over your ears.

⑦ Tie the elastic band behind your head.

⑧ Bring the knot of the rubber band to the front and tuck it under the Super Men Towel to complete the towel.

*The width of the Super Men Towel is likely to be larger than the width of your face, so if you crease the area around your nose, there will be more space around your mouth, which will reduce the amount of the mask sticking to your mouth when you breathe.

You can either untie the elastic band each time you wear it, or you can leave it tied and put it on over your head.
